      STORM PREPAREDNESS: BEFORE A STORM

      • Build an emergency kit with essential items including water, flashlights and batteries to meet the unique needs of your family. Find a suggested list of items at ready.gov
      • Stock up on non-perishables, such as canned goods and pet food, and make sure you have adequate medical supplies and prescriptions.
      • Save your valuable computer work by purchasing a battery-powered back-up power source—it will provide power to your computer long enough for you to save your work and shut down properly.
      • Charge cell phones. Have a backup wireless battery pack.
      • Download and print the storm safety checklist to keep handy if you lose power.
      • Make sure your car tank is filled with gasoline.
      • Make a list of emergency phone numbers or program them into your cell phone. Handy numbers to have include the Red Cross, fire, police and a family doctor.

Home Use Medical Devices: If you are a home medical device user, it is important that your device works during a power outage and that you have a plan in place to ensure you know what to do.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration can help you create a plan with the assistance of a healthcare professional. This plan will help you:

      • Obtain and organize important information about your medical device.
      • Have the necessary supplies for the operation of your device.
      • Know where to go or what to do if you need further assistance during a power outage.

AFTER A STORM - Safety Guidelines

      • Stay clear of all fallen tree limbs and electrical wires as well as anything they are touching.
      • If you have to drive, watch out for trees and wires in the roadway. Do not drive across a downed power line.
      • If you see downed power lines notify local emergency personnel by calling 911 or call us.
      • When your power returns, turn on your appliances one at a time to avoid a power surge.
      • Learn to recognize the signs of a gas leak to keep you and your family safe.
      • Never enter a flooded basement or home until the electricity and natural gas service are turned off.
      • Do not attempt to place natural gas appliances back in service yourself. A licensed plumber or contractor will check, clean, repair and pressure test all gas pipes.
      • If any natural gas equipment was under water, have it inspected by a licensed plumber or contractor before turning it on.
      • Review the USDA guidelines for food safety to know if your food is safe to eat.
      • Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.

      Blocked Roads

      • Clearing roads is a public safety priority and involves ensuring that the lines that are down are deenergized and making temporary accommodations to remove wires or electrical equipment that are in the roadway.
      • If you come across a fallen tree blocking the road, call your local police or fire department to report, as it can cause fires and electrical hazards.
